YHD-1 was the top of the YHD line Yamaha headphones from the late 1980's, the other models in the line-up were YHD-2 and YHD-3. This was
Yamaha's last attempt at marketing Orthodynamic headphones to the
masses. YHD line of headphones are geared towards new direction of
miniaturization and portability. The frames are very good looking, small
and easy to carry around because they fold very nicely. The headphones
are also very sensitive and should work out of portable source, this is
not surprising...the era of Walkman was cometh.

The driver seems to be a redesigned, 38mm drivers with 6 micron diaphragms, Orthodynamic driver that comes closer to Electret with it's 6
micron diaphragm. The completely open design and stylish frame were not
an ideal companion to such great driver, as the result the sound
quality suffered and the drivers capabilities were not fully utilized
according to many not so happy users. There were, however, some people
very happy with the looks and performance. Opinions vary greatly when it
comes to these unusual headphones.

General Description of the Sound
YHD-1 has a very inviting and somewhat warm sound signature. The bass goes fairly deep, midrange is very accurate, articulate and has
very realistic tone, high frequency extension is also good. The
soundstage is one of the largest among all Orthodynamic headphones that I
heard and everything is positioned accurately in fairly 3D space.
What prevents these headphones from being excellent and makes them just very good is somewhat low level of details at frequency
extremes and relative luck of textural richness present in other top
tier headphones. However given their portable nature they are
surprisingly good for their diminutive size.

YHD-1 sold for approximately $80-$100 in the 1980's. In today's market pairs in good condition routinely sell for above $100 on eBay.

Technical specifications:
Impedance: 125 ohms
Frequency Response: 20 - 20,000Hz
Magnet: Anisotropic Ferrite, 38mm
Diaphragm: 6 micron polyester
Sensitivity: 100dB/mW
Rated Input: 1W

YHD-2 was the second model in the YHD line of Yamaha Orthodynamic headphones from the mid-late 1980's, the other models in the line-up
being the similar-looking YHD-1 and the simpler YHD-3. YHD-2 is the less
bassy version of the YHD-1 with cheaper less powerful magnets and lower
sensitivity as a result.

This line was Yamaha's last attempt at marketing Orthodynamic headphones to the masses. The YHD line was aimed at the rising demand
for miniaturization and portability that accompanied the popularity of
Sony's Walkman personal music players and their imitators. The YHD-1 and
2 frames are stylish, small and easy to carry around because their
flat-black metal and plastic and leather frames fold nicely in a way
that's reminiscent of expensive sunglasses. The YHDs are also very
sensitive and usually work with modern portable sources.

The YHD driver is a radical redesign: 38mm diameter magnets with a tensioned 6 micron diaphragm, an Orthodynamic driver that comes close
to a contemporary Stax electret capsule with its 6 micron diaphragm. The
completely open design and stylish frame were however not ideal
companions for a dipole driver, great as it was, and as the result the
sound quality suffered and the drivers' capabilities were not fully
utilized, at least according to many not so happy users. However, some
people were very happy with the YHDs' looks and performance. Opinions
vary greatly when it comes to these unusual headphones-- enough owners
liked them so they are not rare on the used market, but not enough
bought them to allow Yamaha to continue developing this type of
headphone, and so the Orthodynamics disappeared from North America
sometime between 1987 and 1990, leaving only Fostex to carry on in the
pro audio market.

General Description of the Sound

Stock, my unit good bass and highs, but a somewhat closed-in sound. It might benefit from some additional damping. /DAC YHD-2 sold for approximately $60-$70 in the 1980's. In today's market pairs in good condition routinely sell for above $60 on eBay or Yahoo Japan.

Technical Specifications:
Impedance: 125 ohms
Frequency Response: 20 - 20,000Hz
Magnet: Isotropic Ferrite, 38mm
Diaphragm: 6 micron polyester
Sensitivity: 97 dB/mW
Rated Input: 700mW

The Yamaha YHD-3 Was the bottom of the range YHD-series headphone. It does not share the same frame as the YHD-1 and 2 although similar in
that its open backed, and also has a slightly less efficient and less
powerful driver.
It is practically the same design as the YHE-50a/s. Comparable to the relationship between the HP-3 and HP-50.
The main physical differences are the colour scheme, and earpads. The
YHE series have small supra-aural faux leather donut earpads, whilst the
YHD-3 have cloth/sponge earpads similar to the YHD-1/2.
General Description of the Sound In stock form the sound is rather soft. Lacks upper treble. But otherwise not too far off flat. Like most orthos, the stock sound is not
very remarkable.
Modded with damping felts and iFrogz earpads the sound improves susbtantially. Bass is now much better, as well as the whole spectrum.

YHD-3 was manufactured starting 1985 until the beginning of 1990's and sold for about $40 at that time

Impedance: 125 Ohm
Frequency Response:20-20000 Hz
Magnet: Isotropic Ferrite, 38mm
Diaphragm: 6 micron polyester
Sensitivity: 97 dB/mW
Rated Input: 500 mW

Disassembly

It can be a bit tricky to open up the YHD-3 for the first time, so here is a
proposed method. Bear in mind there is a good chance of damage
to the housing whilst doing this, so proceed with care.
1) Locate the three clips. And insert a small flathead precision
screwdriver VERTICALLY into each clip and it should move them slightly.
You HAVE to push all the way down vertically and only apply a very small
levering force.
If you don't push down all the way you will snap the clips.
2) Once you have done this, the baffle wont budge an inch because Yamaha
has glued the baffle on. You can approach this in different
ways. Here is one way:
Use a hobby knife to make a small incision at the baffle/cup joint around where a clip would be. Push a flathead precision
screwdriver in and gently lever. This should break the glue at that
point. Then from there, use two flathead precision screw drivers to
alternately gently lever the baffle off.

To reattach, you just push the baffle and push the clips back in
gently. The baffle and cup might need a bit of blu-tak or similar from
now to form a perfect seal. And also the small incision you made in step
two is a permanent small hole that you might want to seal as well.

Yamaha's YHE-50A is a mono, off-white variant of their YHD-3 headphone. There is
also a stereo version, the YHE-50S. They all share the same
drivers and frame construction but the YHEs have small pleather donut
pads instead of the YHD's cloth-covered foam discs, plus a
pleather-covered headband. The original purpose of these headphones was
silent practice on Yamaha's line of electronic organs. They are a
replacement for the HP-50 series.

General Description of the Sound

Yamaha YHE-50A
Here is my comparison of modded YHE-50A to YH-1 and
YHD-1. YHE-50A was rewired for stereo and modded with felt and reflex
dot.YHE-50A is very smooth, and sounds on par with YHD-1 and YH-1 in
this regard. After modding it is very fast but still has a lot of bass
control and slam. Mids are very Yama-ortho mids with all that delicious
smoothness. YHD-1 is much looser and darker making it more seductive. My
ericj-modded YH-1 is faster and much leaner. YHE-50A takes the middle
ground. I have a recording with a lot of "added" record surface hiss and
YHE-50A reproduces it perfectly, not the case with YHD-1 as it sounds
somehow slightly wrong with it; YH-1 is on par with good electrostatic
headphones in this test.
The soundstage is much larger than YH-1 and is a bit smaller than YHD-1.
The positioning is very good so you get an expanded soundstage
without losing the accuracy. Overall YHE-50A sounds on par with its big
brothers and sisters but it is a tiny headphone.
If you can find it, get. It will make a very nice portable headphone due to its small size and good sensitivity.

Technical specifications:
Impedance: 125 ohms
Frequency Response: 20 - 20,000Hz
Magnet: Isotropic Ferrite, 38mm
Diaphragm: 6 micron polyester
Sensitivity: 97 dB/mW
Rated Input: 1000mW

Yamaha YHD-1..3

На картинке YHD-3 с амбушюрами Geekria(с алиэкспресс).
